thrifted treasures

nothing excites me more than a day of thrifting.  we have been doing a lot of that lately and have found so many beautiful pieces for our home.

the vintage singer sewing machine (1909 model) is one of my favorites.  we purchased the entire treadle table and are using it as our tv stand and of course have the machine out on display as well...it's one of the most beautiful models i have ever seen.  the night we got it matthew and i were talking about how amazing it is to have a piece with so much history...i would love to see the clothes that were made for families with this treasure.


i came across a few other beauties yesterday...a vintage american flag,  disneyland vinyl - we have been searching for place mats for our dining room table, we thought nothing is more fun than a record, and antique wooden hangers...yes wooden hangers!  about 60 of them for $6.  is it sad that I am excited for this?  i've been wanting to ditch the plastic hangers for quite some time now so i have an excuse :)  XO, lindsay

snow scene mason jars and a pomegranate on top!

i finally took out all of our antique blue mason jars and clear mason jars from our wedding and decided to put them to decorative use around our home. i went to pinterest for some inspiration and fell absolutely head over heels in love with the mini snow scenes and decided to recreate it...pronto!

i headed over to joann fabrics and found a set of 21 village snow trees in varying sizes (for 60% off) and also bought a bag of "snow."  some other things i had on hand were stems of red berries from hobby lobby, candles, and white rice and beans - for other mason jar fillers.

i started creating and thought having some different height variations would be a good idea as well...i wanted to use vintage books, but didn't have any on hand so opted for something a little different...anthropologie wrapped books.  i knew saving those monthly catalogs would come in handy :) i fired up the candles, added a pomegranate for some color dimension and tada...all done :)

i'm happy with how it turned out and am excited to change out the scenes each season...i'm thinking terrariums for spring :)  XO

painted birch trees & a few small details

the best kind of decorating is the "free" kind...don't you think? matthew and i were lucky enough to get a lot of antique family pieces handed down to us...furniture, mirrors, china, pictures things like that.  the last few weeks we have been going through  our basement finding little treasures that we had completely forgotten about...it's like opening presents early :)

recently,  i have become particularly fond of the popular wallpaper "woods" available at anthropologie but with a $200 price tag i just couldn't bring myself to fork over that kind of money.  instead i grabbed a pencil, black acrylic paint and a tiny paint brush and went for it...

6.5 trees later (with 8.5 trees to go) this is what our kitchen wall looks like.  i haven't touched it for a week...perhaps the 2-4 hours it takes per tree tired me out a bit, i'm hoping to finish it up by january...i'll keep you posted :)  matthew and i laugh because he was just talking about how he really misses his annual trips to colorado...i told him now he can just look at the wall and pretend he's there!

it does make a pretty backdrop for indoor pictures too :)  XO, lindsay

design*sponge at home - an inside look - p.s. it's amazing!

matthew and i recently decided that it was finally time to start making our house feel like a home. both of us are guilty of allowing ourselves to be completely consumed with work...non-stop. because of this we have neglected to make our little nest feel...well like a nest.

over the last few weeks we have taken some time to liven up our space **all of which i will be sharing in a new scenic glory feature starting in december "house to HOME project"** to help get a little motivated i stopped at the barnes & noble up the street and was so excited to see one copy left of design*sponge at home. i have never rested by eyes on something so completely and totally amazing! here's a little peak inside...

this gem is complete with over 350 picture filled pages...if this book doesn't inspire you, i don't know what will.  after paging through it for only a few seconds i knew i had to take this one home (for only $35 how couldn't i)?

i find myself looking through it every day over and over.  each time i discover something new...it truly never gets old!  needless to say we have made a lot of progress, and i am beyond excited to continue making our house a home.  i'll be sharing bits and pieces of our transformation starting next week!  until then, i thought i would share a little something from our dining room table :)

i have always believed that it's the small things that count...even if it's just a little something on a dining room table! XO
